This Month's Clinical Focus: Dermatology

Like other major pharma sectors, the global dermatological treatments market has marked strengths and advantages as well as pressures. Growth of generics and biotechnological products create new opportunities as well as challenges to established brands and treatments. According to industry analysts, the market sector will be driven by product launches and reformulations of existing drugs. Furthermore, growth will be driven by increasing incidences of skin diseases and an increased demand for treatments, especially in fast-developing nations. Conversely, the dermatology market faces increasing pressure due to substantial market penetration from generics, OTC market maturity, and competition from big pharma, biotech, and specialty pharmaceutical companies.

Market expansion will depend heavily on the reformulations of existing products or improved drug delivery, new dosing schedules, and targeting of specific patient populations. There are promising dermatological agents currently in development. There are an estimated 300+ clinical trials ongoing in dermatology and plastic surgery.

Quick Market Facts

The psoriasis market was forecasted to post the most aggressive growth rates to 2011, as Raptiva and Daivobet drove growth over the forecast period. Psoriasis treatments are forecast to expand sales at a CAGR of 12.5%, reaching sales of $1.9 billion in 2011. With Raptiva voluntarily removed from the marketplace, Daivobet will likely benefit from it's absence.

With Roaccutane and Diane facing generic competition, the branded oral acne treatments market is set to decline over the forecast period. Forecast sales of the acne market are estimated at $2.7 billion in 2011.

The corticosteroid market is estimated to value $3.7b by 2013. Reformulated combination corticosteroid/anti-infective brands will continue be integral to the treatment of psoriasis and dermatitis and will continue to be the primary growth drivers within the area.
